Teen charged in hammer-wielding robberies

Ottawa Police have laid charges in connection with a series of recent retail robberies involving a suspect armed with a hammer.

Three robberies took place in the city's west end between June 7th and the 15th. In each case a lone teenaged girl entered a gas station asking for cigarettes.

The suspect then pulled out a hammer and demanded money.

In two of the cases she fled with an undisclosed amount of money. In the third case the clerk grabbed the hammer and the girl fled empty-handed.

Police have charged a 16-year-old girl with three counts of robbery, three counts of possessing a weapon in commission of an offence, three counts of wearing a disguise and three counts of breach of undertaking.

The girl is scheduled to appear in youth court Tuesday.

She cannot be named because she is under 18 years old.
