By The CANADIAN PRESS

A truck driver has been charged after more than 18,000 kilograms of fertilizer spilled on Highway 401 east of Kingston, Ont.

Provincial police say a tractor-trailer carrying potash fertilizer overturned after striking a small car from behind early Thursday afternoon in a construction zone.

Police say the Ministry of the Environment was called in to supervise the cleanup of the roadway.

The roadway re-opened shortly after 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

The occupants of the car were not injured, while the driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and faces a careless driving charge.
