Assault charge against Ottawa soldier dropped

Charges have been dropped against an Ottawa soldier, accused of assaulting a Russian diplomat.

Private Kevin Martin had been charged with aggravated assault, but the victim left the country shortly after the alleged incident and hasn't come back.

And, because he's gone, there's no reasonable prospect of a conviction.

The diplomat, Andrey Gorobets, had been found in the lobby of a Sandy Hill high rise last March, with what appeared to be stab wounds.

Fears of an international security breach were initially sparked at the news a DND employee was implicated, but those fears were quickly calmed.

Martin and Gorobets had reportedly met each other for the first time the day of the incident. They both had apartments in the high rise.
