Canada Day Open/Closed and Road Closures

Canada Day falls on a Tuesday this year, and many businesses will be closed for the statutory holiday.

  • Most grocery stores, malls, and stores are closed in Ottawa and Gatineau.
  • LCBO and Beer Stores will be closed.
  • Banks are closed.
  • All government offices are closed, and government services are shut down.
  • Garbage/Recycling/Green Bin pick-up is postponed for one day, which pushes back collection one day for the rest of the week.
  • City-run libraries are closed.
  • The Trail Waste Facility is closed.
  • City-run child care centres are closed.
  • The Sexual Health Centre and Satellite Clinics, SITE office, Dental Clinics and Well Baby Drop-In are closed.
  • The Ottawa Public Health Information Line and AIDS line are closed.
  • OC Transpo's Customer Relations Department is closed.
  • Courts are closed.
  • Most registered programs at swimming pools, community centres and arenas are cancelled on Canada Day; however, clients should check with their facility to confirm, as some exceptions will apply.

However some things are still open.

  • Most businesses in the Byward Market will remain open.
  • The Rideau Centre will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • The Loblaws and Metro on Rideau Street will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Most Shoppers Drug Marts, and Mac's Convenience Stores will be open.
  • SAQ liquor stores will be open, with the exception of those inside any malls that are closed.
  • National museums will be open.
  • The City's 3-1-1 service will be open for urgent matters.
  • The SITE Mobile Van will be operating from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Some outdoor pools, indoor pools and fitness centres will be open on Canada Day for public swimming, and fitness classes, with modified schedules.
  • All beaches, splash pads and some wading pools, will be open on Canada Day, weather permitting.

  • Pinhey’s Point Historic Site
  • Billings Estate National Historic Site
  • Cumberland Heritage Village Museum
  • Fairfields Heritage House

And the City Hall Art Gallery and OAG (Ottawa Art Gallery) Annex will remain open.

OC Transpo is operating on a special holiday schedule all day, but will offer free service all day. Para Transpo will be free all day as well. All City of Ottawa parking regulations will apply on Canada Day.

There will be a number of road closures throughout downtown Ottawa:

From 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Canada Day:

  • Wellington Street, between Booth Street and Vimy Place East and Westbound
  • Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway, between Vimy Place and Island Park Drive
  • Slidell Street, between the roundabout and Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway
  • Parkdale Avenue, between Forward Avenue and Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway
  • Goldenrod Driveway and Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway

From 6:00 a.m. Canada Day to 2:00 a.m. July 2nd:

  • St. Patrick Street, from Mackenzie Avenue to Alexandra Bridge
  • Murray Street, from Mackenzie Avenue to Alexandra Bridge
  • Alexandra Bridge
  • Rideau Street, from Dalhousie Street to Sussex Drive
  • Nicholas Street, from Besserer Street to Rideau Street
  • Sussex Drive, from Rideau Street to York Street
  • Mackenzie Avenue, from Murray Street to Wellington Street
  • Colonel By Drive, from Rideau Street to Daly Street
  • Wellington Street, from Kent Street to Sussex Drive
  • Eastbound on Wellington Street, from Lyon Street to Kent Street
  • Elgin Street, from Wellington Street to Laurier Avenue
  • Metcalfe Street, from Albert Street to Wellington Street
  • O’Connor Street, from Wellington Street to Albert Street

  • Slater Street, from Metcalfe Street to Bronson Avenue
  • Bronson Avenue, from Laurier Avenue to Sparks Street
  • Commissioner Street, from Albert Street to Wellington Street
  • Colonel By Drive, from Daly Street to Main Street
  • Daly Street, from Nicholas Street to Colonel By Drive

From 7:00 p.m. Canada Day to 2:00 a.m. July 2nd:

  • York and Clarence streets, from Sussex Drive to Dalhousie Street
  • George Street, from Byward Street to Dalhousie Street
  • Northbound on Sussex Drive, from George Street to Murray Street
  • Byward and William streets, from George Street to Clarence Street
  • Parent Street, from Clarence Street to Murray Street

In Gatineau, the following closures will apply:

From 6:00 a.m. Canada Day to 2:00 a.m. July 2nd:

  • Laurier Street, from Des Allumettières Boulevard to Sacré-Cœur Boulevard
  • Saint-Étienne and De Verdun streets, from Notre-Dame-de-l’Île Street to Laurier Street
  • Alexandra Bridge

From 9:00 p.m. Canada Day to 2:00 a.m. July 2nd:

  • Laurier Street, from Des Allumettières Boulevard to Maisonneuve Boulevard
  • Coucellette Street, from Laurier Street to Maisonneuve Boulevard
  • Hôtel-de-Ville, Victoria, Elisabeth-Bruyère and Papineau streets, from Notre-Dame-de-l’Île Street to Laurier Street
