City could build multi-use pathway on St. Patrick

It could soon be easier for cyclists coming from Vanier and New Edinburgh to access the ByWard Market.

The City's Transportation Committee has passed a motion that would see a multi-use pathway created on St. Patrick Street between Cobourg and Beausoleil.

"It's the space where the existing sidewalk is on the north side," said Rideau-Vanier Councillor Mathieu Fleury. "They're creating a three metre width multi-use pathway. It's asphalt."

The infrastructure could be put in for around $150,000, which is cheaper than normal because work is already being done to re-surface the road and the money would come from a fund for multi-use pathways that currently has a surplus.

The City had initially looked at making a pathway along St. Patrick, but was denied funding from the province and decided to just re-surface the roadway. Fleury said now that they have all of the engineering, they decided to try to go ahead with the project.

If approved by full city council next week, the pathway would be built in September.
