American flag flies at City Hall for 4th of July

The stars and stripes are flying high at City Hall today in honour of our American counterparts as they celebrate Independence Day.

The American flag was raised slowly by the Governor General's footguards as its band played the Star Spangled Banner.

Standing at attention were city officials, members of the Royal Canadian Legion and new U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman and his wife.

He says that flag represents so much.

"It's a symbol of home for Americans," he said. "This is a symbol of home for us as Americans who are living for either a long time or a short time in this beautiful city. This is an incredibly gracious gesture of welcome, of friendship."

This is Heyman's first July 4th as American Ambassador to Canada and he said he is already feeling right at home in Ottawa.
