The Canada Border Services Agency has charged a Stittsville couple with trying to smuggle a vehicle into the country.
The CBSA says a woman failed to declare a 2015 SUV valued at more than $68,000 when she crossed the border at Prescott on May 24th. Border agents allege she failed to declare the vehicle during questioning in order to avoid paying the duties and taxes on the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that the woman's husband had already tried to enter the country with the vehicle in April at another crossing without declaring it.
At that time the SUV was seized by the CBSA until it was picked up on May 24th to be exported back to the United States.
Fortune Mendaza and Emmanuel Tava are facing charges of evading payment of duties and smuggling under the Customs Act.
They are scheduled to appear in court in Brockville on July 18th.
