City to retire number of Route 76 bus

The City of Ottawa plans to retire the number of the Route 76 express bus to honour the six people killed in last September's bus-train crash near Fallowfield station in Barrhaven.

It was a #76 double-decker that was involved in the collision with a VIA Rail passenger train.

The route itself will be renumbered.

"This was a request by all family members," Mayor Jim Watson told CFRA. "They all agreed that they would like to see that number retired and it will be replaced by route #72 and that will take place in September."

Watson said there will also be a commemorative plaque or memorial.

It will be a design acceptable to the families of the victims, at a site to be decided upon.

There will also be a minute's silence at the September 17th Transit Committee meeting, and city flags will fly at half mast on the September 18th anniversary of the tragedy.
