Devontay Hackett makes Ottawa court appearance in connection with fatal prom-night stabbing

18-year-old Devontay Hackett made his first court appearance Saturday morning in Ottawa, after evading police capture for a month in connection with the fatal stabbing of St. Pat's high school student Brandon Volpi.

The Ottawa Citizen reported that Hackett made an appearance by video from the Elgin Street police station, to face a charge of second-degree murder. The Citizen also reported that Hackett's mother attended the hearing and outside the court, said the case was "heartbreaking all the way around," adding, "He's a kid."

Hackett was arrested by police in Toronto Friday. He had been wanted on a Canada-wide warrant issued June 10th. On June 7th, Volpi was stabbed during a fight outside Les Suites Hotel on Besserer and later died from his wounds.

Hackett is the only suspect in the case.
