Federal, provincial and city politicians were all on hand Saturday afternoon for the official opening of the new Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge.
The 143-metre long bridge spans the Rideau River between River Road and Prince of Wales Drive - connecting the Riverside South and Barrhaven communities.
It includes transit lanes, on-road cycling lanes and sidewalks.
The bridge will also contribute to public safety by enhancing emergency response capabilities to both Riverside South and Barrhaven communities.
The total cost of the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge Project was $50 million. The Federal and Provincial governments are each funding a third of the project’s eligible costs, to a maximum of $16 million each -- while the City of Ottawa is contributing the remaining funding.
Construction of the bridge was delayed a number of times and it was originally scheduled to open in 2012.
