Bay Ward candidate runs on 'bear surveillance program'

A new candidate running in the Bay Ward in October's election has some interesting proposals.

In a video posted to his YouTube channel, Brendan Mertens said he has big plans to replace Ottawa's green bin program.

"What I'm going to do is get rid of the green bin program to replace it with a 24-hour bear surveillance security program," he said. "That way I save the tax payers money and I stop the gravy train."

In another video, Mertens vowed to crush the country of Poland.

"I'm causing a ruckas (sic) in the Nepean area," he wrote to Ottawa comedian Tom Green on Twitter. "I'm a by-product of your comedy. hope (sic) you don't mind."

Mertens officially filed his nomination papers at the city's election office Monday and is listed on the city's website along with fellow Bay Ward candidates Mark Taylor, Alex Cullen and George Guirguis.

According to IMDb, Mertens is a graduate of Loyalist College, where he took the film program. He has worked as a camera man, stunt co-ordinator and as an extra on the horror sequel Urban Legend 2: Final Cut.
