Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, and Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic Marc Garneau were speakers at a pro-Israel rally, held in Ottawa Wednesday.
The event was organized by the Jewish Federation of Ottawa.
Baird says the crowd gathered "to stand in solidarity with those who are living each day in terror, for themselves, and their families, and indeed their entire country."
Baird says a cloak of fear and terror has fallen on the state of Israel.
And while Garneau is normally critical of Baird in the House of Commons, he echoed the sentiment expressed by the Minister.
"For some to argue that you can't attack Hamas terrorists because of the risk of killing innocent Palestinian civilians is equivalent to saying, 'you're not allowed to defend yourself, and you'll just have to deal with those rockets,'" says Garneau. "What country in the world would accept not being able to defend itself?"
The rally was connected to a similar event in Toronto via a live feed.
On Wednesday, Israel and Hamas agreed to a UN-brokered five-hour humanitarian cease-fire, to allow Palestinian civilians a chance to restock supplies, such as food and water. The pause began at 3:00 a.m. ET Thursday.
To date, over 220 Palestinians and one Israeli have been killed in the week and a half of fighting between the Jewish state and Hamas militants.
