High-profile Brockville trial moved to Ottawa

A high profile trial that was originally going to be heard in Brockville is being moved to Ottawa.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger moved the trial to Ottawa over fears that jury selection would be too difficult in Brockville, because of how well-known the defendant is, and the chances of a mistrial would be too great.

Nancy Lane is charged with first degree murder in the 2009 death of her husband Art Lane, both of whom were well known in the surrounding community. Nancy was a former Prescott town councillor and Nurse, and Art was well known in the labour community, a long-time member of OPSEU.

The trial will begin in Ottawa in February 2015. 100 witnesses are expected to testify, many of whom are also well known in Brockville.
