The Ottawa Police Arson Unit is taking charge of investigating two fires that took place Monday - one in Lincoln Heights and another in Stittsville.
Fire crews were called to 804 Forest Street off of Carling around 9:30 yesterday, where they found a fire in the basement of an empty two-storey, three bedroom duplex.
They say the home had been vacant for two days since the tenants had moved out, but there was a box spring and garbage left in the basement. There was $100,000 worth of damage to the apartment. The neighbouring unit received minor smoke damage, meaning the two residents there were displaced.
The Arson Unit is also looking into a blaze at 171 Lloydalex Crescent in Stittsville that caused around $450,000 worth of damage.
No one was home when the blaze broke out. By the time crews arrived, the fire had spread from the back of the kitchen into the attic and had vented itself through the roof.
No one was injured in either blaze.
