An Ottawa landlord has been slapped with $75,000 in fines for fire code violations in 16 residential apartment-style rental unit buildings throughout the city.
Investigators began looking into Saickley Enterprises Ltd in March 2013, after fire fighters were called to put out a blaze at 371 Gilmour Street.
While at the scene, they noticed numerous fire code violations.
In light of the extent of the problems at the building, investigators also visited 15 other properties owned by Saickley Enterprises, where they found other fire code violations.
In late July of this year, the owners plead guilty to several counts under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.
A total of eight corporate defendants were convicted of 120 fire code violations. The court imposed a combination of fines and suspended sentences.
The fines amounted to $60,000, but with a 25 per cent victim surcharge, the total fee was $75,000.
