Charge laid in Rideau Canal SUV crash

A 61-year-old Ottawa man is charged with refusing to provide a breath sample after an SUV crashed into the Rideau Canal late Wednesday night.

Emergency crews were called to Colonel By Drive near the Bank Street Bridge around 11:15 p.m.

Ottawa Police say the vehicle collided with a light standard and plunged into the canal.

First responders had to smash the SUV's window to pull the male driver out; he was the only person inside.

Joseph Maniscalco was treated on scene for head injuries and taken to the Ottawa Hospital Trauma Unit, where he's in stable condition.
