Lansdowne Park officially opens to the public

Mayor Jim Watson declared Saturday Lansdowne Park Day in Ottawa, as the urban park hosted a free fair to officially open the park.

Mayor Jim Watson says after years of planning and construction, it's rewarding to see Lansdowne come to life.

"We finally landed on something that I think is really special," he said. "To have 18 acres dedicated to the public, and a lot of things for people to do."

People who attended the opening say they're largely impressed with the park, and were impressed with how big and open it is.  At least one resident said he would have preferred the new commercial spaces to fit with Aberdeen Pavilion and remind residents more of "Old Ottawa," as opposed to a Kanata or Barrhaven shopping centre.

Watson says several community groups and organizations have already signed up to use the space for events and festivals.
