Parkdale Food Centre says no to junk food

A local food centre is turning away some donations.

If it's not good for you, you likely won't find it at the Parkdale Food Centre.

Executive director Karen Secord told CTV Ottawa if it doesn't make the cut -- it's return to sender.

"If we're getting it from the Ottawa Food Bank, we send it back," she said. "So that would be salt, sugar and fat. Anything that's expired, any kind of chips, any kind of candies, desserts, sweets-type things. We would send all that back. We also would never, ever give out pop."

She said everyone deserves good food and they're doing their part to ensure those in need are well-nourished.

"I think that food banks have really become the problem," she said. "We've started giving out the worst food: fat, sugar and salt."

She said giving people poor quality food does not help anyone, so they are striving to do better.
