Rare virus considered potentially serious to humans found in Lanark horses

A rare virus carried by mosquitos which can infect humans has been found in two horses in Lanark County.

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit says Eastern Equine Encephalitis or "EEE" is a potentially serious neurological disease in all age groups and can cause death.

Symptoms in humans range from flu-like to more serious problems including seizures.

There has never been a reported human case of EEE in Ontario.

The Health Unit is reminding people to take precautions against mosquito bites.
