Police to remind students to reign in back to school partying

It's that time of the year again - back to school for thousands of university and college students.

Ottawa Police are partnering up with local universities, by-law and other community partners to ensure the traditional welcome back parties don't get out of hand.

Acting Insp. Mike Laviolette with Ottawa Police told CFRA they'll be educating students living in areas like Sandy Hill and Old Ottawa South.

"A lot of times, these students, it may be their first time away from home and exciting as that may be, they may sometimes need to be reminded that you have neighbours here, and not only the neighbours, the residents there, but their fellow students as well, which is why the universities and colleges are so key in helping get the word out," he said.

Laviolette said around this time of year they get a lot of noise complaints and complaints about disturbances, public intoxication, drug use and other nuisance issues.

Police will have an increased presence around campuses as they remind students about being respectful neighbours, safe and legal behaviours, bike safety and the dangers of excessive drinking.
