Madely's Top 5

5. Sens take Classic

The Sens roared back to beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 before 54,000 Vancouver fans at B.C. Place for the Heritage Classic. Craig Anderson turned away 29 shots. This puts Ottawa three points back of Detroit in the playoff race. The 67's put on a brave comeback in Owen Sound, but lost in overtime 7-6.

4. Oscar night

'Gravity' won seven Oscars, but '12 Years a Slave' was the big winner with the most coveted award for Best Picture. Matthew McConaughey won Best Actor for "Dallas Buyers Club." Best Actress went to Cate Blanchett for "Blue Jasmine." The Best Supporting Actor went to Jared Leto for "Dallas Buyers Club", and Best Supporting Actress went to Lupita Nyong'o for "12 Years a Slave."

3. High school rankings

Two Ottawa-area high schools are among Ontario's top 10, according to the Fraser Institute's high school rankings. Colonel By and De La Salle tied for 8th out of 740 schools in the province based on mathematical and reading test results for grade 9 and 10 students. School board officials find this all controversial and annoying, saying it does nothing to help parents decide on the best school for their child. They say parents should think of other factors such as physical education, critical thinking and extracurricular activities.

2. U of O student  exec target of online attack

The President of the University of Ottawa student body says she will meet with U of O President Allan Rock today. Anne-Marie Roy wants to discuss how to combat a "rape culture" she says exists on campus. Four student body members have resigned over a verbal sexual attack on her during a Facebook conversation. Allan Rock released a statement saying, "The comments demonstrate attitudes about women and sexual aggression that have no place on campus, or anywhere else in Canadian society."

1. Ukraine

The West appears to have very little room to put pressure on Russia. The question now is whether the Ukrainian army will get involved in any shooting match. There have been some unconfirmed reports of shots fired, but there is no evidence of that as of yet. The Russian army has invaded the southern part of the Crimean Peninsula. If the Russians move further into northern Crimea to, as Vladimir Putin puts it, "protect its interests and the Russian-speaking population of those areas", then Ukrainians would be forced to fight back.
