Madely's Top 5

5. Rough Ottawa hockey weekend

The Ottawa 67's are out of the playoffs after a shameful 12-1 loss to North Bay yesterday. The Sens lost to Colorado yesterday 3-1 while still reeling from Saturday's loss to the Habs. In that game, the Sens gave up a 4-1 third period lead only to lose 5-4 in overtime.

4. Hudak talks energy and jobs

Ontario PC leader Tim Hudak appeared on "The Province" yesterday, a Bell Media talk radio program, and addressed questions from callers about his jobs plan and hydro rates. He didn't say how much he would reduce hydro rates, but he did guarantee that rates "under the PC government will be cheaper than in a Liberal government." He said the PC's would end the subsidies for industrial wind and solar projects.

3. New Ford video

Toronto mayor Rob Ford is caught on a new video from this weekend outside Toronto city hall, appearing to be stumbling and swearing loudly as he attempted to hail a cab. The footage, reportedly shot at 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, shows the mayor wearing green St. Patrick's Day beads and standing with a group of people trying to hail a cab. A Mississauga woman told CTV Toronto that her 13-year-old son recorded the video with his iPod. She said Ford agreed to take a picture with her son, but was shocked when he swore loudly in front of her son.

2. Crimea votes to join Russia

In the so-called referendum, Crimea voted 93% in favour of seceding from Ukraine, according to exit polls. The Russian side always was clearly going to win the referendum by a large margin. Crimeans who want to live under Vladimir Putin and the Russians began celebrating their triumph Saturday, the day before the vote. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has dismissed the referendum, saying the G7 will tighten sanctions.

1. Malaysia airliner hijacked?

The timing of the final words from the cockpit of the missing Malaysian jet are being interpreted as an intent to deceive, giving no indication that anything was wrong. At a news conference this morning, Malaysian officials indicate the jet was flown at 5,000 feet for a long period of time. One of the plane's communication systems had already been disabled when the final voice said, "alright, goodnight." Someone on board the plane first disabled the ACARS device at 1:07 a.m. Around 14 minutes later, the transponder was also shut down.
