Happy Canada Day!

5. Free agent day!

It’s July 1. You know what that means: Free Agent Frenzy! You might be thinking ahead to the pyrotechnic show tonight on Parliament Hill, but TSN is predicting there will be fireworks starting at noon today when NHL teams can sign eligible free agents. It’s also possible that Jason Spezza will be traded by the Senators today but we’ve said that before.

4. Ford returns

Rob Ford said he was ashamed, embarrassed and humiliated. In his first news conference, he apologized to Toronto residents and acknowledged he had a substance abuse problem about which he had previously been in denial. He said he accepts sole responsibility for his poor judgment and for his hurtful and degrading comments about other people. For the first time he admitted that his alcohol and drug use had an impact on his job as mayor. He said his commitment to living clean was unwavering. But he soon switched tracks into a campaign speech, saying he plans to continue fighting for the taxpayers of Toronto.

3. It was a tie!

The Liberals won two and the Conservatives won two of the federal by-elections yesterday. The Conservatives were re-elected in two ridings in Alberta, but their share of the vote declined. In Fort McMurray-Athabasca, the Conservatives captured less than 50% of the vote, compared to 72% in the last federal election. In the other riding, the southwestern Alberta riding of Macleod, they won by a huge margin. The Liberals were re-elected in Scarborough-Agincourt and they took Trinity-Spadina away from the NDP. That riding was held by Olivia Chow before she stepped down to run for mayor of Toronto.

2. Orgaworld contract coming

The City of Ottawa has won its arbitration case with Orgaworld. And that means we’ll soon see the results of its audit of the contract. The city’s auditor general said yesterday the audit will be released July 9. The dispute with Orgaworld has been going on for years. But now Ottawa has confirmed it has the right to include leaf and yard waste in the green bin program. The contract always said that but Orgaworld has disputed it and turned away some of the waste. In 2013, 80,000 tonnes of organic waste was sent to Orgaworld, but the company accepted only 69,000 with the rest being sent to the Trail Road waste facility.
