  • A brutal siege of a cluster of towns by ISIS in northern Iraq is taking place. The Americans gave air support to Kurdish forces and to regular Iraqi army units, but, here's the twist, also to Shia militias. These are former Iranian militias that the Americans once did battle with.

Ontario says changing the birth certificate process would pose a financial burden on the province and one of the "vulnerable segments of the population."
  • In business: Financial markets are closed for Labour Day, but stories are coming out of Eastern Europe about the continued aggression in Russia and Ukraine leading to a little bit of an impact on the European trading day. Also Tim Hortons is trying to make peace in America
  • In sports: Canadians Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic both play today at Flushing Meadows for the U.S. Open. The Edmonton Eskimos are in Calgary to face the Stampeders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will be hosting the Toronto Argonauts
