What you Need to Know in Ottawa Today


After eight days without one, the mostly elderly residents of a four-story public housing building in Lowertown finally have an operating elevator again. Tenants with mobility issues were stranded in their flats at 181 Bruyere, many had no access to groceries or clean laundry. Ottawa Community Housing brought in extra help after tenants went public with their plight on 580 CFRA. OCH says there were several repair complications when an uncommon elevator part failed.


Military spending is a hot topic at the NATO meetings underway in Wales today and tomorrow. Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada will stand by its allies, but has no plans to ramp up military spending to meet the 2% of GDP target requested of other NATO countries by the United States and Britain.


Another contentious issue was whether NATO should establish permanent large military bases in Eastern Europe. European heavyweight Germany is strongly opposed to it. Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are all requesting a stronger NATO presence to protect them from the Russian aggression.


Young people seeking treatment for mental illness at Ottawa hospitals are waiting as long as 10 months to see a doctor. Despite recent improvements, CHEO and the Royal Mental Health Centre say wait times are harming young people whose mental illness can deteriorate without treatment.


Conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists on multi-use pathways are on the increase due to accidents and near collisions. City staff say the solution could be to build new paths wider, or build two narrower ones, one for walkers, the other for bicycles.

In sports: The National Football League's regular season begins tonight as the Green Bay Packers visit the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks
