Ottawa's Butterfly Child is "doing very well" after undergoing a stem cell transplant procedure to help treat his blistering skin disease.
Pitre's transplant took place in a Minneapolis hospital on Thursday. The 16-year-old was alert and smiling after waking up from the procedure. He had to undergo nine days of chemotherapy and radiation leading up to the transplant.
His mother, Tina Boileau, donated her own bone marrow. She tells CTV Morning Live Ottawa Pitre didn't have any reactions to the transplant.
Pitre has epidermolysis bullosa, or EB, which causes his skin to blister. He's the first Canadian to undergo this kind of treatment for EB in the United States.
Boileau says Pitre will rest for the next two days, before undergoing another two days of intense chemotherapy and then entering into a recovery period.
