Drivers used to dodging parking tickets on weekends, may have to worry less about moving their cars by next summer.
On Wednesday, the City's Transportation Committee voted in favour of doubling the street parking limits, from the current three-hour maximum between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to six hours on weekends and holidays.
The change would impact most residential neighbourhoods outside of the downtown core.
Many councillors say the change will help residents with limited driveway space who want to host parties and out-of-town guests, without saddling them with parking tickets.
But others like Capital ward councillor David Chernushenko say the move could increase parking problems.
"You've got a visitor and you said 'yeah don't move your car because you're not going to get a spot back again.' So that has the undesirable effect of actually reducing the parking supply," says Chernushenko.
Stittsville councillor Shad Qadri says he also worries about turnover if the parking limits are changed.
"The six hours is great to have ... but there are some drawbacks that I think we need to look at," says Qadri. "If someone parks starting at 11 or 12, well there's no room for anyone else to park."
Qadri says he is also concerned that extended parking limits could impact early-morning snow removal.
A survey over the summer found 72 per cent of respondents were in favour of the extended parking limits on holidays and weekends.
If the change is approved by council next Wednesday, it will go into effect June 1, 2018.
