A new partnership means Ottawa Community Housing tenants will get more affordable Internet access in the new year.
National Capital FreeNet is partnering with the city-owned social housing corporation will provide residents with unlimited Internet for $25 a month.
Stéphane Giguère, CEO of Ottawa Community Housing, says the service will especially benefit the more than 6,000 youth in Community Housing.
"Internet costs were increasing over the years and for us it was a constant conversation with our tenants, how it can be made more affordable so our kids living in our communities could be successful," Giguère said.
“We were looking at Internet as one of the most common drivers for needs for our tenants for education, communication, and employment.”
The announcement comes after the CRTC declared Internet a basic service for Canadians.
There will be no installation charges for residents with a landline and no cancellation fees.
Those living in Ottawa Community Housing can sign up for the service starting Jan. 3rd.
