The City has given the green light to separate roads and railways at five locations in south Ottawa, including the site of the Barrhaven bus crash.
City Council approved the Barrhaven Rail Safety Program Wednesday.
It will see overpasses built at the Woodroffe Avenue, Fallowfield Road, and the southwest Transitway crossings.
Underpasses are recommended for the crossings at Merviale and Jockvale.
The cost is an estimated $430 million. Mayor Jim Watson has said the City would need financial assistance from other levels of government and possibly Via Rail to cover the cost.
However, the City will proceed with an environmental assessment before looking for the additional funding.
Five passengers and the driver of an OC Transpo bus were killed when the bus collided with a train at a rail crossing with the Transitway, near Fallowfield Station, in September 2013.
