Following a daylight stabbing on Wednesday, Councillor Tim Tierney says the City should look at putting CCTV cameras on Jasmine Crescent.
The Beacon Hill-Cyrville councillor is speaking out about the idea, after holding a meeting with the Jasmine Safety Committee.
Tierney says it's disheartening to see violence continuing on Jasmine.
“We’re not saying necessarily that we will do it,” Tierney says. “But the committee feels pretty strongly that we at least examine it as a possible tool for the police to use.”
Tierney says he thinks cameras act as a crime deterrent and wants the City to study the idea.
“Do a report and see what successes they’ve had in areas that have CCTV like Hamilton, Toronto, or Cornwall.”
Tierney says he'd also like to see more space for after school activities in his ward and is asking the City to study whether a community centre in Jasmine Park is possible.
Tierney says he is also launching the "Report It" campaign in January, which encourages residents to report suspicious activity and crime to police when they witness it.
In addition to Wednesday's stabbing, Jasmine Crescent has been the scene of a number of violent incidents in the past several months:
