After Ottawa Police confirmed they will be piloting body cameras on their officers, discussions are ramping up on their positive and negative effects.
Gregory Brown is a former police officer that is now studying sociology and anthropology at Carleton University.
He says body camera's made him think twice as an officer.
"I was involved in a physical altercation with another person and I was totally justified in using force, but I reflected on the camera in a very quick manner. It was a very dynamic situation. But it did cause me to pause for a second and alter what I was doing, which would've been completely justified - the use of force that I was going to apply. Then I transitioned to another use of force."
Brown says that second guessing is known as intrusive thought, and is not seen as a positive thing among those in the police force, as it poses risks for an officer or someone of the public to get hurt.
He did, however, say that the majority of officers surveryed across North America are in favor of wearing the cameras.
