The OPP are warning that the emergency/grandparent scam is resurfacing.
They issued the warning after a Pembroke resident sent more than $7,000 to Gambia in West Africa after receiving an email from someone posing as a friend who claimed they needed emergency cash.
Police say victims are usually contacted by phone or email, claiming to be a friend, grandchild, or family member.
The usual excuses include legal trouble, injury or illness, or other financial emergency.
Police say people should take time to verify the identity of the people contacting them, and not hand over personal or banking information until their identity is confirmed.
