It’s a reminder that ice is not yet thick enough to walk on, even for dogs.
Ottawa Fire officials say around 4:50 p.m. Thursday, a woman and her dog went through the ice on a retention pond near Coldwater Crescent and Meadowbreeze Drive in Kanata South.
A man and a woman nearby then entered the water to rescue her, as did an Ottawa Police officer, before the water rescue crew arrived.
The women had told rescuers they could no longer feel their legs, according to fire officials. Firefighters helped one of the women and the Ottawa Police officer up the embankment of the pond to get them out of the water. They were then given emergency blankets, toques and firefighters' turnout jackets to warm up.
One of the women had to be taken to hospital.
Ottawa Fire says firefighters deal with a "substantial" number of animal rescues, and they want you to keep your pets leashed and away from the water.
