A story about a former Royal Canadian Mint employee charged with smuggling gold pucks out of the facility in his rectum is making international headlines.
Despite the humorous nature of the tale, it sheds light on a possible security issue at the Mint.
The court heard Leston Lawrence set off metal detectors on numerous occasions...but so did other employees.
The Mint is not responding to claims the missing gold was never reported. But they say in recent months they have put new security measures in place so they can keep a closer eye on their gold.
The defence claims there is no conclusive evidence tying Mr.Lawrence's gold to the Mint. The Crown says the gold pucks Mr. Lawrence cashed in are the exact size as a unique spoon used at the Mint.
Lawrence has pleaded not guilty. Justice Peter Doody hands down his decision in November.
