David Gourlay says he wants to run for city council.
The former president of the Ottawa Champions announced his intention to run in Kanata North on Thursday morning.
Gourlay, 47, is a Beaverbrook native and says he started thinking about a run over the holidays.
"I thought the timing is great. I've done so well with baseball but I'm looking for new challenges and new opportunities," said Gourlay.
As someone who grew up in Kanata and is now raising his own family there, Gourlay says he wants to contribute to the growing community.
"I really enjoy the concept of door-knocking, sitting down with residents, talking about some of the challenges they see in their neighbourhoods," says Gourlay.
Gourlay says the Ottawa Senators' planned move to a downtown area presents a big challenge for the west end of the City.
The ward of Kanata North is currently represented by Marianne Wilkinson.
Coun. Wilkinson tells CFRA she has a candidate in mind that she'd like to back in Kanata North.
But the incumbent says if her preferred candidate doesn't run, she will run again. Right now, Coun. Wilkinson says she's undecided.
The municipal election is Oct. 22.
