A 49-year-old Gatineau man has been arrested in connection with a cold case in Alberta.
RCMP say Stephane Joseph Raymond Robert Parent was arrested by Gatineau Police on Saturday and ordered to return to Alberta to face charges in connection with the 2002 death of his former girlfriend.
21-year-old Adrienne McColl was last seen in Calgary on Valentine’s Day in 2002.
Her body was found by a rancher three days later in Nanton, about hour's drive south of Calgary.
Parent was considered a person of interest in the case at the time, but was never charged.
RCMP Superintendent Garrett Woolsey said at a press conference Monday that Parent is now charged with second-degree murder and will stand before a Justice of the Peace Monday, with future court dates to be determined.
Woolsey says Parent bought a one-way ticket to Ottawa shortly after McColl's death and had been living in the National Capital Region ever since.
He says advancements in forensic technology allowed police to lay charges, but he would not speak to specifics of the case, citing the ongoing investigation.
