The Conservative Party Leadership Debate is taking place in Ottawa Sunday afternoon.
The event, hosted by MP Pierre Poilievre, will take place from 1:30 p.m., to 3:30 p.m. at the Ochardview Conference Centre in Greely.
Ten candidates will meet with hundreds of conservatives and debate issues in effort to earn their votes.
Kristy Cameron's The Newsfeed spoke with four of them.
Michael Chong:
Chong is an MP for Wellington Halton Hills - representing that riding since 2004.
He spoke with Kristy about Canada's peacekeeping efforts.
"I don't think we should engage in peacekeeping without a clear mandate and without a Canadian chain of command. We all saw what happened in Rowanda when we were unable to prevent the slaughter that took place because of an ineffective chain of command. So that's the first thing - we need a clear Canadian chain of command in those operations. We also need to ensure that we have adequate resources for men and women in uniform to engage in those missions, and I'm not sure that's currently the case. I would think that those kinds of missions need to be carefully thought out before the governments commits to it for political reasons."
Andrew Scheer:
Scheer is an MP that served as the Speaker for the House of Commons from 2011 to 2015.
He told CFRA that he's completely against the idea of issuing a carbon tax.
"I'm against it in all its forms. I haven't seen a truly revenue neutral carbon tax yet, that's revenue neutral for every individual. I worry that there are some conservatives who are open to it because they think that you can have it and get rid of some other types of programs and subsidies and regulations. But, my fear is that eventually those subsidies and regulations would come back and then you will have a carbon tax plus all those things."
Scheer went on to call issuing the tax "economic suicide".
He added one of the main goals of his campaign is to reach a broader audience of younger voters that the Conservatives did not get votes from at the last Federal Election by having a more positive and inclusive message.
Deepak Obhrai:
Obhrai currently represents the riding of Calgary Forest Lawn for the Conservatives.
After Deepak Obhrai voiced his disagreement with Kellie Leitch's idea for screening immigrants coming to Canada for Canadian values, he says he received multiple hate emails asking him to go back to his own country.
He told Kristy Cameron that his focus remains on his campaign.
"I am not going to waste my time on these kind of nonsenses and just focus on what I want to do. You need to understand that people I hear from are totally opposed to these so called 'undefinable Canadian values". To be very frank with you, what is Canadian values?"
Obhrai says Canada represents freedom and openness for those who are moving here from other countries.
Erin O'Toole:
O'Toole is an MP for Durham who also formerly served as the Minister of Veterans Affairs in 2015.
He says one of his focuses is dealing with the legal issue surrounding marijuana in Canada.
"I supported the Chief of Police's position on marijuana - which was not legalization, where Trudeau wants to go and all the problems we're already seeing with that. But, turning it into a ticketing offense. So, making it illegal so police could lay a charge if warranted, but if there is a situation where someone is personally using or kids or something that were experimenting in high school, you don't want to see the full weight of the law go on them. So, the police would have the option of ticketing."
O'Toole says the Trudeau government's legalization of marijuana is already creating multiple problems.
Today's debate will be the only one in the Ottawa area.
