The Ottawa Public Library Board has voted 8-1 in favour of a $168-million plan to build a new central library branch near LeBreton Flats.
The proposed site at 557 Wellington Street is on City-owned land, and was pitched as the recommended site by Library staff in December.
The proposed library would be a joint project between the Ottawa Public Library and Library and Archives Canada.
Somerset Ward Councillor Catherine McKenney was the only member of the Board to vote against the proposal. She has been an outspoken critic of the proposed site, arguing it is not accessible for people with mobility issues, and downtown residents who typically walk to the library.
Tuesday night’s meeting at City Hall lasted for more than four hours. Several speakers spoke both for and against the proposed site.
The decision to build at 557 Wellington must still go before full City Council on February 8.
