An Ottawa City Councillor is headed to Queen's Park to fight for lower hydro rates for rural residents.
Osgoode Councillor George Darouze will present a petition with over 8,400 signatures asking for fair hydro rates for some 45,000 Hydro One customers in Ottawa, who he says pay up to 30 per cent more than Hydro Ottawa customers.
Darouze says he wants the province to order Hydro One to charge its Ottawa customers Hydro Ottawa rates.
Hydro One should listen to residents and should adjust their rates accordingly to the rates of Hydro Ottawa.
He said the government needs to listen to the voters and adjust their rates accordingly to the rates of Hydro Ottawa.
"They need to make it affordable. Right now people are making choices between turning the lights (on) or feeding their kids."
Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod will join Darouze in Toronto to present the 'Fair Hydro for Ottawa' petition.
MacLeod explained that there are major discrepancies in the bills.
"I think what George is doing is he's saying let's be fair, let's seek some assistance for those in rural Ottawa who are paying skyrocketing hydro bills"
The petition will be presented in the Legislature at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
