Ottawa Police say an officer had to shoot and kill a dog in Sandy Hill Friday night after the animal attacked a man who was holding his one-year-old son.
Police say the dog, a Bull Mastiff-Rottweiler mix, was roaming the neighbourhood around 6:30 p.m. when it started attacking the man when he and his child fell to the ground.
At some point the child got separated from his father, police say, when the officer was able to distract the animal and, worrying it would continue its attack, shot and killed it.
The child sustained a minor injury in the fall. The man suffered non-life threatening injuries to his face, hands, and backside.
Police are investigating and ask anyone with information to come forward.
