Mayor Jim Watson is rejecting calls to build a new Ottawa Public Library main branch in Confederation Park.
Bookmark the Core released a video this weekend, calling on the City of Ottawa to "get it right" when it comes to building a new central library.
The group says the proposed site on Wellington Street is not a good idea, and suggests alternative sites in the downtown core. One idea is to build the new library at the federally owned Confederation Park.
In a video, Bookmark the Core says 20 per cent of Confederation Park could be used for a new public library. It adds “it’s a highly accessible and attractive location,” with nearby public parking and public transit access.
On Twitter, Watson said "no way will I support tearing up parkland."
In a separate tweet, Watson said "I will never take scarce greenspace away from Centretown."
Confederation Park is owned by the National Capital Commission.
The Ottawa Public Library Board votes on the proposal to build the new Ottawa Public Library main branch on Wellington Street on Tuesday.
