Monday will mark one year since Abdirahman Abdi died following an interaction with Ottawa Police outside his Hintonburg apartment on Hilda St.
To mark the anniversary of his death Justice for Adirahman Abdi Coalition organized an event to remember him.
“The event really is for the community to come together, to stand in solidarity, and to really spend some time healing together”, said Dahabo Ahmed Omer, the group’s co-chair.
Abdi, a 37-year-old Somali-Canadian, lost vital signs following an interaction with Ottawa Police July 24, 2016. He was pronounced dead in hospital the next day.
Const. Daniel Montsion is charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon. He is currently suspended with pay.
The memorial will take from at Somerset Square Park, on Spadina Ave., between 6p.m. to 8p.m.
During the event there will be a plaque unveiled in Abdi’s memory. It will be placed at the entrance of 55 Hilda St.
