A former Royal Canadian Mint employee has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after being found guilty of smuggling more than 160-thousand dollars in gold out of the mint in his rectum.
Leston Lawrence was convicted in November of stealing 22 gold 'pucks' and selling most of them through an Ottawa gold-buying store.
The crown had asked for a sentence of three years.
Defence attorneys had asked for an 18-month term, saying the 35 year old was making efforts to pay back the Mint.
