It is often said around this time of year that it is better to give than to receive. You can do both this Saturday at the Barrhaven Legion, as local Tory MPP Lisa MacLeod hosts her annual free breakfast in support of the Barrhaven Food Cupboard.
“We’re really looking for people to come out for this free breakfast, help out the food cupboard, meet some of their neighbours and really make a family’s Christmas this year,” MacLeod says. “Nobody wants to see a child go hungry at Christmas.”
The free breakfast will be on from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Barrhaven Legion at 3500 Fallowfield Road. You’re asked to bring donations of non-perishable food items, but you can also bring a turkey, fresh or frozen, to donate to the Food Cupboard.
“Boston Pizza is going to be on site with us and if you bring a turkey they’ll provide you with a $30 gift certificate for a three-topping pizza,” MacLeod says.
You can also bring cash donations, if you’re able, and MacLeod says even other needs like diapers and toiletries can be donated.
“If they can’t use it, we can find other folks that can,” she says.
MacLeod says the need in the community has grown as Barrhaven has gotten bigger. More than 300 families rely on the Food Cupboard every month, and they are 100 hampers short of their goal to feed all of their families this Christmas, she says.
“People are having a difficult time with paying their hydro bills, the cost of gas has gone up, the cost of food has gone up,” MacLeod says. “I think it’s important that neighbours help neighbours.”
