Ottawa International Airport is in the midst of one of its heaviest travel days.
Roughly 17,000 people are expected to move through the airport's gates today, which is double the usual amount.
December 23rd is typically the busiest travel day of the year across Canada.
"Being prepared I think is the most important thing people can remember when they're travelling," says spokesperson Krista Kealey. "Make sure you have the appropriate documentation, make sure you know the status of your flight to make sure that it's on time, and make sure you understand what you can and can't take on the aircraft."
Kealey also suggests flyers leave early to beat the airport traffic.
Although they're fully staffed in preparation of the crowds, there may be some lines at security. The airport is adding a pinch of Christmas spirit to make the wait a little easier.
"We like to make it a festive atmosphere so we've had music playing, and we've got carolers in the terminal, so we like to make sure that everybody's having a good time when they're travelling. It reduces the stress," she said.
Even Santa Claus and one of his elves were on hand to distribute candy canes and greet children.
"It's our favourite time of the year here for sure," said Kealey.
The airport also has a service for those escaping the cold.
"Anybody who's travelling to the sunny south, if they've got coats and boots we do have a service available in arrivals where they can store them and pick them up when they come up. It helps lighten the aircraft loads and also saves the passengers from having to cart the coats and boots around when they're at their destination."
She added that shops are open for anybody looking to get a last minute gift.
"Everybody is staffed up and ready to handle the increased numbers."
