Contractors working on Ottawa’s new O-Train Confederation Line have been charged with workplace safety violations over the upkeep of the site.
A memo to City Council says the various companies making up the Ottawa Light Rail Transit Constructors were charged by the Ministry of Labour with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The memo says the charges generally relate to the observed upkeep of the worksite in January 2017, and concerns with the storage and disposal of equipment and materials.
The Ottawa Light Rail Transit Constructors tell the city they “take such charges very seriously and intend to defend their position in this matter before the court.”
The City of Ottawa says there were no Lost Time Injuries on the Confederation Line project in the second quarter.
Meantime, the OLRT-C and the individual companies that comprise the group (SNC Lavalin, Dragados Canada and Ellis-Don) agreed to pay a fine to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in June for failing to supervise a sub-contractor who deposited liquid waste at lands that are not designated as a waste disposal site.
The memo to Council says the Ottawa Light Rail Transit Constructors no longer does business with the sub-contractor.
