Ottawa police will be launching a pilot project to test the use of body cams on police officers.
Details of the project are still not clear, including how and when it will roll out. However, Ottawa Police Association Matt Skof said several officers have already been selected to take part.
Skof said there still must be discussions over privacy, legal, and adminstrative issues, but he's all in favour of the idea.
"Everybody has a cell phone," he said. "Everyone has an opportunity to edit video or put it out there without context and that's the advantage of the body worn video, is that it provides our context and our perspective of it, without this is the last 30 seconds. It provides the entire incident."
Ottawa Police had been monitoring similar projects in other cities like Toronto, where police spent $500,000 on a year-long project. Ottawa Police are reviewing the results of that pilot.
Ottawa police chief Charles Bordeleau has said that equipping all Ottawa police officers would be far too expensive.
Skof said if the results of the pilot project are positive, the costs should be assumed by the provincial government.
