Ottawa Police say if you get an email telling you to pay a fine for a traffic violation -- it's fake.
The email directs the potential victim to a link to pay a fine and then the victim is asked to submit personal information.
It will look something like this:

Cause: negligent driving
Violation No: 638112140
Date of infringement: 12/11/2016
Amount due: 103 $CAD
This fee will be sent by mail to your address. However you can screen it now, please press here Driver Notification.
The fee must be honoured within the statutory period of up to 26.11.2016.

The police do not send out traffic infraction notices by email, and don't take email addresses at traffic stops.
