Ontario is once again wading into the controversial waters of photo radar.
Premier Kathleen Wynne announced at an Ottawa's Elmdale Public School today that new legislation would allow plate-scanning tech to return to school zones and community safety zones.
It's up to a municipality as to whether it wants to use them.
"What we're talking about is a speed-activated camera to take pictures of the license plates of unsafe drivers who are speeding recklessly through neighbourhoods where our children are playing," said Wynne.
Mayor Jim Watson, who was also at today's announcement, had previously dismissed photo radar as a cash grab.
He has since altered his stance, saying use in school zones is acceptable.
Photo radar first appeared on Ontario roads in the 1990s.
It was scrapped when the Mike Harris Tories seized power from the Bob Rae New Democrats.
The proposed legislation would also make it easier for municipalities to take part in Ontario's red light camera program.
