Leona Ritchie had an unexpected start to her day when a neighbour rang her doorbell to tell her about a visitor in her backyard.
"I went and had a look and there he was. He looked almost the size of a horse."
Ritchie was surprised to see a moose in her fenced-in yard off a small road near Jeanne D'Arc and the 174. Despite its young appearance, she estimates the moose was between 500 and 600 pounds.
"It was out in the front with a gallop and was able to scale the fence. One he was in, he was all 'how do I get out of here?'"
Enter Ottawa Police and NCC officers who came in to tranquilize the moose and bandage an injured leg.
Neighbour Mike Sutherland captured part of the rescue effort on video.
"Once they were able to wrangle (the moose,) they got him settled and made sure he was OK," he told CFRA.
Ritchie says she was impressed with how gentle the officers were as they prepared the moose for transport.
Senior conservation officer Jason Pink says the animal has been released in the Mer Bleue Conservation Area, which has a healthy moose population.
